SPOTLIGHT: 2nd National Legal Aid Conference

KAMPALA-- The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Kahinda Otaiire today held a press conference at the Uganda Media Centre in regard to the upcoming 2nd National Legal Aid Conference scheduled to take place from June 26 - 27, 2014 here in Kampala. The Minister was accompanied by stakeholders and partners in legal aid service provision that included representatives from the Legal Aid Service Providers Network (LASPNET), Judiciary, Uganda Law Society, Law Development Centre (Legal Aid Clinic) and Justice Centres Uganda.

Hon. Kahinda Otafiire pointed out that the Government of Uganda through the Justice, Law and Order Sector supports the establishment of comprehensive and harmonized legal aid service provision in its commitment to improve the well being of Ugandans especially the vulnerable and poor through access to justice mechanisms. This is exhibited through development of a comprehensive national legal aid support regime and support to the Justice Centres Legal aid project hosted by the Courts of Judicature.


About the 2nd National Legal Aid Conference

The 2nd National Legal Aid Conference is organized under the spirit of partnership between the State and non-State actors to enhance access to justice for all. The theme of the conference is “Accessible and Effective Legal Aid – The key to unlocking Uganda’s Development potential” shall take place on 26th and 27th June 2014 at Imperial Royale Hotel.

The objective of the conference is to explore and discuss initiatives aimed at addressing major policy gaps, regulatory challenges and practical limitations to achieving the national legal aid priorities in relation to broader development strategies so as to ensure prosperity for all Ugandans.
