The construction of these justice centres is a fulfillment of JLOS’ avowed mission of enhancing access to justice to all Ugandans enshrined in the sector Strategic Investment Plan (SIP III), now in its second year of implementation.
Kiruhura Justice Centre
Kiruhura District is part of the larger Ankole sub-region with an estimated population of about 300,000 people. The planned justice centre will be located at the district headquarters (approximately 40 miles by road from Mbarara) housing the Courts, Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and the District Police headquarters. This hub of justice is expected to add value to the administration of justice with the provision of adequate office space and facilities for front line JLOS institutions.
Ibanda Justice Centre
Ibanda district (boardering Kiruhura district to the east) is located about 70 km by road from Mbarara with an estimated population of 255,000. The proposed Justice Centre will house the Chief Magistrates Court, the offices of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and the district headquarters of the Uganda Police Force. This is meant to create a one-stop centre for the delivery of justice. The Centre will ensure that suspects are promptly brought to court without delay and that cases of lost or forgotten police files are greatly minimized or better still eliminated completely.
The ground breaking ceremonies of Kiruhura and Ibanda justice centres are part of the 3-day long JLOS leadership monitoring and evaluation visit being carried out in various districts of south western Uganda. The team heads to Isingiro on May 22 2014 (for the official opening of the Isingiro Justice Centre) and Kabale later on in the week on March 23 2014.
